Identity and Violence: The Illusion of Destiny (Issues of Our Time)By Amartya Sen

“One of the few world intellectuals on whom we may rely to make sense out of our existential confusion.”―Nadine Gordimer

In this sweeping philosophical work, Amartya Sen proposes that the murderous violence that has riven our society is driven as much by confusion as by inescapable hatred. Challenging the reductionist division of people by race, religion, and class, Sen presents an inspiring vision of a world that can be made to move toward peace as firmly as it has spiraled in recent years toward brutality and war.

From Publishers Weekly Nobel Prize–winning economist Sen deplores the "little boxes" that divide us in this high-minded but seldom penetrating brief against identity politics. Sen observes that ideologies of hate typically slot people into communities based on a single dimension that trumps the multifaceted affinities of class, sex, politics and personal interest that make up individual identities. This "reductionist" us-versus-them outlook is not limited to jihadists, he argues, but is a widespread intellectual tendency seen in Samuel Huntington's "clash of civilizations" paradigm, in postcolonial critiques of democracy and rationalism as "Western" ideals, as well as in efforts to "dialogue" with moderate Muslims. (These last, he feels, pigeonhole Muslims in purely religious terms.) Sen rebuts the "singular affiliation" falsehood with a cursory historical, literary and cultural survey of the diversity of supposedly monolithic civilizations (Akbar, a 16th-century Mughal emperor and champion of religious toleration, is a favorite citation.) Sen's previous work (Development as Freedom) injected liberal values into development economics; here, he argues that the freedom to choose one's identity affiliations is the antidote to divisive extremism. Stitched together from lectures, the book is dry and repetitive. While Sen's defense of humane pluralism against narrow-minded communalism is laudable, he never really elucidates the social psychology that translates group identity into violence. (Mar.) From Booklist Violence is "promoted by a sense of inevitability about some allegedly unique--often belligerent--identity that we are supposed to have," argues Sen in this rejection of the civilizational or religious partitioning that defines human beings by their membership in a particular group. Reminding us that each person is actually a composite of many affiliations, the author informs us that he is Asian, an Indian citizen, a Bengali with Bangladeshi ancestry, an economist, a teacher of philosophy, a Sanskritist, a believer in secularism and democracy, a man, a feminist, and a nonbeliever in afterlife; he omits, perhaps out of modesty, that he is a Nobel Prize winner. Those who would define themselves according to one monolithic system of categories (read jihadists, communitarians, and Samuel Huntington and his followers), says Sen, ignore both the composite nature of humankind and the freedom to choose how much importance to attach to a particular affiliation in a particular context and, in doing so, perpetuate sectarian violence. The key to peace, then, is the rejection of stereotypes in favor of humane pluralism. Pithy and optimistic. Brendan DriscollCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

The author Hearn has a great flair for language and immersing one in the moment, he does a great job of describing life in the french antilles, from carnival time, industry, cultural anecdotes, interesting historical tidbits and the impact of colonization on its populace.I wanted to like this book more but as a person of African descent it was a bit hard too. Not out of place in his time, Hearn employs alot of racist language to describe the people of majoritavely African descent. They are "less than comely" and the African is "vulgar" while he seems enthralled by th mixed race people of Martinique, he also seems to find a savagery in their beauty attributed to their African heritage.Otherwise, it was an exuberant, languid depiction of the Islands, You could almost pick up the cadence of Creole being spoken and felt as you yourself ought to be careful to spot the much feared "fer de lance" snake as you traversed Martinique's glowing hills with Mont Pelée fuming in the distance. If you enjoy Caribbean literature particularly that concerning the French Antilles i would recommend authors like Raphael Confiant, Maryse Conde , Gisele Pineau ,Jacques Roumain and others.

Lafacadio Hearn travelled to the French West Indies at the end of the 19th Century and while the book is of historical interest, very little of what he observes or writes about is of particular relevance today. His observations reveal the cultural assumptions and biases of his time period ... and very little about the French West Indies.

Certainly not the same quality or interest level as historical novel “Lydia Bailey” which I loved.

Interesting observations at that particular historical era. However some of the author's observations were too detailed and causes the reader to lose the thread of the narrative.

This is a great book, purchased at a great price, and delivered at breakneck speed!!! This review is only focused on the condition of the book, the price, and the speed of delivery because I have not read it yet.

A great writer and a fascinating man, better known for his books about Japan... This book is one long Caribbean moment preserved in amber.

I love everything I have read by Lafcadio Hearn. Living in New Orleans I started with his writings about my city. Because I read his writings about Japan I have visited there several times. I am now in Martinique (for the 5th time) re-reading Two Years in The French West Indies (I lost my first copy in Hurricane Katrina).

Mediated Memories in the Digital Age (Cultural Memory in the Present)By Jose van Dijck

Many people deploy photo media tools to document everyday events and rituals. For generations we have stored memories in albums, diaries, and shoeboxes to retrieve at a later moment in life. Autobiographical memory, its tools, and its objects are pressing concerns in most people’s everyday lives, and recent digital transformation cause many to reflect on the value and meaning of their own “mediated memories.” Digital photo cameras, camcorders, and multimedia computers are rapidly replacing analogue equipment, inevitably changing our everyday routines and conventional forms of recollection. How will digital photographs, lifelogs, photoblogs, webcams, or playlists change our personal remembrance of things past? And how will they affect our cultural memory? The main focus of this study is the ways in which (old and new) media technologies shape acts of memory and individual remembrances. This book spotlights familiar objects but addresses the larger issues of how technology penetrates our intimate routines and emotive processes, how it affects the relationship between private and public, memory and experience, self and others.

Review
"The book is accessible to undergraduates and provides an excellent framework for postgraduates both in terms of its clarity in developing the conceptual tool of 'mediated memory' and in addressing some aspects of the digital in relation to this. One of its strengths concerns the way in which van Dijck unpacks the conceptual flaws conventionally associated with collective memory and the problematic assumptions that underlie much of the discussion of the relationship of media to this... The book is beautifully written, telling an engaging story, as well as tackling with academic erudition the study of mediated memories in the digital age."—Memory Studies

"Van Dijck shares many fascinating insights."—CHOICE

"Mediated Memories in the Digital Age is an engaging and important book that challenges scholarly understanding of the relation between memory, memory artifacts, and memory practices and elucidates how these relationships are changing in the digital age. José van Dijck brings a theoretically sophisticated yet pragmatic approach to bear on her survey of today's most widespread digital practices of mediating memories. Her persuasive and timely thesis is solidly grounded in cultural and media studies, and her work is well informed by recent research in cognitive science, neuroscience, psychology, and visualization technologies." —Richard Grusin,Wayne State University

"The medium is the experience. A personal memory box full of private media objects was the inspiration for José van Dijck's newest and most innovative contribution to the zone between media studies and science studies where she has been such an important voice internationally. Detailing the ways that media and memory are not separate experiences through readings of the digital diaries and lifelogs of people suffering from Alzheimer's disease, Dutch recorded popular music, and still and moving images from a range of contexts, van Dijck presents an exciting new way of thinking about cultural memory and a cultural sense of self." —Lisa Cartwright, University of California, San Diego

"José van Dijck performs a sophisticated analysis that blends neurological research on memory, media technologies, and the "personal cultural" construction of memories into a coherent, far-reaching theory of the function, role, and significance of memory as we move from analogue to digital representations. Filled with deep insights and surprising observations, this book should be required reading for anyone interested in memory, digital technologies, and their co-evolution." —N. Katherine Hayles, University of California, Los Angeles
