Great book. I'm currently using with my German tutor in order to get my pronunciation correct and learn new words. I like the paragraph by paragraph translations.
This book although designed for beginners in the German language is actually quite challenging. The stories are written in intermediate to advanced German, but their length is perfect. The ability to see the translation of the sentence or paragraph just read, makes German learning a lot easier since it allows the reader to figure of how close he or she was to the actual meaning of a word, sentence or entire paragraph for that matter. I used to think of myself as an intermediate German reader/speaker, but this book showed me that I was not even close. Not knowing what a certain word means is not much of a problem with this book, since a translation of the word is provided at the end of each short chapter. In addition, questions at the end of the chapter will help you keep much of what you just read by going back to certain parts of the story to be able to answer them. The ability to read the questions is made easy by having both the German and English translation. Overall, this book has a good balance of education and entertainment by well-written stories along with the translation of highlighted words and questions in both languages. If you are on a journey to learn German, this book is for you. It will challenge beginner, intermediate, and advanced learners.
I am a beginner learner of German and having these short, interesting stories has been great! The vocabulary is well distributed so I was able to understand a lot of it without having to look words up all the time, which made it rewarding for me and made me want to keep reading! The way the stories and exercises are structured is very nice and having small manageable portions to read, interspersed with the English translations made it so it wasn't overwhelming for a beginner. In reading these stories, I've found my vocabulary has greatly increased and my understanding of how German grammar is structured has as well. It's something you can read more than once and learn from each time. Because there are multiple stories included, there is plenty of information to make this a very valuable resource. I would highly recommend this for those who want to learn German.
I don't consider myself a beginner. I'm a B1 level. This book is suitable for beginners and intermediate learners alike. The stores are concise and interesting. They offer new vocabulary words in each story that I didn't know, which I really liked. I enjoy being challenged and this book has really helped me learn new vocabulary and also keeps me engaged with the stories. Any German language learner should pick this up today!
This book is great for beginners with the paragraph by paragraph translation. They are good stories and have helped improve my vocabulary. Page numbers (and possibly a note section) would be helpful for referencing words that I had learned in another portion of the book.
Although the stories were challenging, they were accessible enough for me as a beginner to get a lot out of them. With regards to sentence structure, the German text right next to the English was extremely useful for me to get use to the way Germans write!
